07 SEO Strategies for Small Businesses

Updated: Jan 4, 2022

Ranking high on search engines like Google can be quite a challenge especially if you are just a small fish in a very large pond, so it is important that your SEO is in order. Here are 7 strategies you can implement right now to start increasing your ranking,

01. Keyword research

Have a brainstorming session with your team and think about the kind of keywords your customers will use when searching for your products or services. Make sure to include keyword phrases too, because this will help your website get ranked higher up if someone searches for the same exact phrase.

Rank your keywords in order of relevance, with the most important keywords at the top and the least relevant lower down on your list. It is important to consider slang words or phrases and abbreviations. This list should be quite extensive, containing between 40 - 50 keywords relating to your business.

Use these keywords in your website URL, page titles and page Meta-data descriptions, which is what search engines use to determine where your page gets ranked,

You can also use these keywords on each of your website pages, to help them rank higher on search engines. You can include them in titles, sub-titles, and main text descriptions. Make sure though to not plaster your website full of these keywords. It is very important that your website still looks natural and is usable.

02. What is Your USP?

Every business should have a Unique Selling Point. Focus on this and include this within your website in order to rise above the competition. This means that potential customers who search for your specific service or product will get shown your website above your competition.

03. Ensure Your Website is Fully Operational.

We touched on this above, but this is extremely important so it is worth mentioning again. NOBODY likes a website that doesn’t function properly, and the same goes for search engines. Test your website and each link before launching it.

Search engines will rank you down if you pages don't work properly or isn't user friendly. Make sure your page is not peppered with keywords or is full of click-bait, and make sure it is easy to read.

04. Build Links to Your Site

Include backlinks to your website on each page, the more backlinks you have, the more credible your site will be in the eyes of search engines.

This is where it can get tricky for a small business to rank high on search engines. Because building links and getting other pages to link to your website can be quite challenging.

It can be beneficial to register your website to local business directories and get them to link to your website.

05. Produce Content!

Search engines will begin to rank a website down if it does not get updated regularly with good quality content. One of the best ways to do this is to produce a blog and keep posting updates on a regular basis.

Be Careful though, because bad quality content can damage your brand! And also affect your ranking.

06. Embrace Social Media

Start sharing your brand and your products or services on social media and link to these pages on your website, and vice-versa, (this creates a backlink to your website). Your social pages are websites in themselves too so these pages will also get ranked on google if they are good quality.

07. Finally, Patience is Key!

Ranking high on search engines doesn't happen overnight. It can take months! Usually a good guide is it should take 4-6 months before you notice any change in your ranking after making your changes. It is important though to not change things around daily, once you have made your changes, leave it alone, otherwise this could have a detrimental effect on your ranking!.
