In our final post of the three part series discussing why social media is important to businesses, we are looking at how a small business can effectively market themselves on social media and what tools they can use.
Establish your Audience
Every business should know their target audience, who their customers are and who they are trying to reach. It should be written in the business plan from day one. On social media it’s no different, once you know your audience you can tailor your posts to speak directly to that audience, and over time, if you keep to your audience strategy, your engagement will continue to grow.
Your social media audience should consist of the people who are most likely to be interested in your product. This can be established by outlining the demographics of your target audience, including age, gender, location, job title, income level, and education.
Establish your Marketing Goals
What do you want to get out of using social media? Do you want more awareness? More clients? More sales? Or just somewhere to post updates and interact with your followers. These are just a few of the opportunities that using social media could bring to your business.
Including these in your digital marketing plan will help you tailor your content and ads to suit. If you have clear marketing goals, it will help your team or your social media manager be consistent in posting content that meets these goals, stick to them, and your page will start to grow right before your eyes.
As above, your team or social media managers should be posting regularly to each of your social pages to make sure your audience never misses a post. Posting regularly has multiple benefits, it keeps your audience up to date with your activities, more importantly, it keeps your business at the forefront of their minds. The more you post, the more engagement you will get. Consistency is key.
If you don’t have the time, (or the patience!) to keep up with posting, you can use post scheduling tools like Buffer, or…... Alternatively, you can hire social media managers to concentrate on posting and growing your pages.
Use Stories & Hashtags
The best ways to increase your exposure on social media today are to use stories and hashtags on your posts. Nearly all the major social media platforms have adopted stories, but Instagram is where they get most engagement. Stories are best for video content, and are a great way to share daily activities as they disappear after 24 hours.
Hashtags are another easy way to gain more exposure online. Including hashtags on your posts allows your posts to show up on different feeds and to new people who search or engage with that particular topic. It’s important to keep the hashtags relevant to your topic you are posting about, and not to overuse them. Try to use niche hashtags too, if they are too broad they will just get drowned out by other posts.
Encourage People to Engage With Your Posts
You can tailor your posts to encourage your followers to engage with you online, because we know that more engagement means more people will see your posts and will result in more exposure online.
You can encourage your followers to engage with you in a number of ways, the most common being posting unique offers, encouraging them to tag their friends who may also be interested and running competitions.
